My daughter came home from school today wearing her older brother’s long sleeve shirt.
“What are you wearing,” I asked her?
She nonchalantly told me that since she was cold at school (and had refused to take a jacket) her brother offered her his long sleeve shirt.
I was shocked.
Ecstatic, but shocked.
That’s the kind of grand gesture you don’t typically see in young children. But in our home, we talk about kindness every day. In fact, it’s one of our only two family rules.
It is literally the topic of our dinner conversations since we use these 60 Kindness Discussion Starters.
And we read books about kind people and what it means to be kind every evening.
Because when we want to raise kind kids, we can’t cross our fingers and hope for the best. We have to on purpose, intentionally parent our children in a way that shows them we value kindness.
And one simple way to do that is to purchase them holiday and birthday gifts with kindness in mind.

I’m not a huge fan of the Elf on a Shelf. We don’t have one. But I do love elves that inspire our kids to be kinder… so in our home, we have the Kindness Elves.
The Kindness Elves bring my kids little notes with suggestions on how they can show more kindness to those around them.
