One of my favorite things as a kid was passing out my cheesy Valentine’s Day cards to my classmates. And I loved collecting their cards too.

Superheroes with cheesy sayings. Smiling kitties. And Disney princesses.

If the valentines came with a piece of candy or a pencil, then it was cherished.

And now that I’m older and I get sweet valentines from my husband and my three kids, my valentines are even more cherished.

But in our house, since we focus on raising kind kids, I want my kids to not only pass out their cute cards to their 25 classmates.

I want them to also focus on spreading love and kindness to their siblings.

But how?

How can we get our kids to focus on spreading kindness among their family members and more specifically, their siblings?

We started this Valentine’s Day family tradition and use these 14 days of Kindness Notes for kids to do just that. Not sure what to write to your kids? Use these Valentine messages for kids that are super sweet!

Why We Use these Kindness Notes for Kids for Valentine’s Day

We are on a mission to raise kind kids. It takes modeling, talking about it often at dinner with these kindness discussion starters, and lots and lots of practice.

No, really.  A lot of practice.

So we have to give kids opportunities to show how kind they are.

We brought the kindness elves into our home to bring our kids inspiration to be kind to others.

We have a Family Kindness Calendar with 365 kid-friendly kindness activities and we volunteer as a family with this monthly volunteer challenge.

It’s a year-round endeavor to raise kind kids and while it’s better to focus on the everyday small, normal, acts of kindness, it’s also fun to go bigger on the holidays.

Like on Valentine’s Day.

So we help our kids on purpose spread love and kindness to each other on Valentine’s Day too.

Because sometimes it can be hard to speak kind words to our siblings.

And sometimes it’s hard to remember to take a moment and tell our kids how special they are to us.

But with these kindness notes we give each other daily from February 1st to the 14th, it takes away the hard part. It takes away the need for reminders.

How to Spread Kindness to Your Family this Valentine’s Day

In our home, we love Valentine’s Day and we celebrate it unapologetically. We even countdown to the 14th with this Valentine’s Day Countdown Calendar.

And we spread kindness and love daily with this sweet family tradition.

We prep these hearts in January so they’re ready to go for February 1st, but they can be used any time of the year.

1. Purchase and download the Kindness Notes heart.

2. Print out a set for each person in your family on cardstock paper.

4. Encourage your children to write kindness notes to their siblings. If they are pre-writers, they can dictate their words or they can draw a picture.

6. Save the kindness notes in an envelope, ready for February 1st.

7. On February 1st, “deliver” a heart to each of your kids. You can put them in a mailbox or a special envelope.

Or you can tape a heart on each of your kids’ doors and help them tape their hearts onto their siblings’ doors.

If your kids share a room like my daughters did when they were younger, tape up a ribbon and put one kids’ notes on one side and the other kiddo’s notes on the other side.

8. Continue to add your hearts each day of February until the 14th to spread kindness and spread the love.

If you don’t start on Feb 1st, don’t worry. These kindness notes can be used year-round.

Stick them in their lunch box, like these kindness lunchbox notes. Or pass them out at breakfast time. Or leave them on their pillow for bedtime.

When all the hearts are up and covering the doors of your home, you will have showered your kids with love and kindness notes.

But more importantly, your kids will have taken the time to showcase their kindness and love towards their siblings.

Which is the most perfect way to celebrate the true meaning of Valentine’s Day.

Sure beats out candy and pencils on a superhero card.
